The Manatee High School Sugar ’Canes are a distinguished dance team with a rich history dating back to 1947. Established as a drill team, they have evolved into a nationally recognized ensemble known for their dynamic performances and unwavering school spirit.

For over seven decades, the Sugar ‘Canes have been an integral part of Manatee High School’s vibrant culture. Their journey from a traditional drill team to a competitive dance powerhouse showcases their adaptability and commitment to excellence. Notably, they began competing in national competitions in 1987, marking the start of their prominence on the national stage.
Performances and Competitions
The Sugar ‘Canes captivate audiences with performances at football and basketball games, elevating the energy and enthusiasm of the crowds. Beyond sporting events, they participate in esteemed competitions and showcases, including the DeSoto Queen’s Court, Lion’s Pride Marching Band Competition, Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) events, MA Regionals, Universal Dance Association (UDA) Nationals, and even the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Commitment and Dedication
Membership in the Sugar ’Canes demands a high level of dedication. Dancers are expected to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and exhibit enthusiasm for dance and school activities. The team upholds a rigorous practice schedule, especially during the two-week Marching Band Camp in July, where they focus on marching fundamentals, sideline routines, and strength conditioning.
